Abbington credits his unique abilities to his desire and heart, and will train with former Rams Running Back Arlen Harris throughout the summer and into his senior year. “I met Coach Harris at the 1st Annual Star 33 Running Back Showcase, and I signed on immediately. The one-on-one training he provides has really convinced me to stick with him,” Abbington said. Chase Abbington stands 6’4 and weighs 210 as of now, and according to him, he is not finished growing. Coach Harris was quick to point out that it is very difficult for a small back to play big. “However,” said Harris, “It is a huge advantage for a big back who is able to play big and small, and that is a craft that Abbington is learning to master.” Abbington seems to be very comfortable with his size, and is more focused on bettering his skills. “In my sophomore year, I ran kind of timid and juked or used my speed to break away,” Abbington said. He added “in my junior year, I just hit when I had to. But in my senior year, it’s going to be all about smashmouth football.” A young man still in full control of his destiny, Abbington continues to prepare for his bright future. He is on the Varsity Track Team this spring, and plans on participating in some of the top football combines and camps coming up. He was even picked for the Nike 7 on 7 tournament, but had to turn it down due to a track meet.
When asked why he chose Mizzou over Kansas, Arkansas, and many other offers he received from big D 1 colleges, he said he liked the offense that Mizzou runs, with special focus on the tailback position. “I am good with the blocks and can bounce it in or out,” said Abbington, “but I am really used to the swing pass, which is a current fit in Mizzou’s game plan.” Abbington intends to train with Coach Harris at Runit Performance and continue his hard preparation for the day he steps onto Faurot Field at Mizzou campus. It is then when he will join the ranks of former Mizzou players like Jeremy Maclin, Blaine Gabbert, and Denario Alexander. And we are left to wonder; will we see the next Eddie George, Steven Jackson, or Christian Okoye….or will we see the next Chase Abbington. Chase committed to the University of Missouri on March 3, 2012. He is set to graduate next year from Fort Zumwalt South, St. Peters, MO in May of 2013. Even though his future appears to be secure, he continues to Prepare Like A Pro.
You can wait for the stars to align, or you can align them yourself. Runit Performance athlete Chase Abbington has done just that. Not only is Abbington an eleventh grade tailback for the Fort Zumwalt South Bulldogs, he is also one of the newest members of the Missouri Tigers football team. That’s right: he is a junior in high school who earlier this spring, committed to a Division I program in the SEC that has sent over 140 players to the National Football League. “I wasn’t always this good,” said Abbington, “as a kid, I spent a lot of my time on the bench. It was not until my 8th grade year when I got the chance to run the ball when it finally started to make sense to me.”
